GEO vs SEO: what changes when an AI answers the search

SEO gets a page ranked in a list of links; GEO, generative engine optimization, gets a business named or cited inside an AI answer. GEO starts with SEO: Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode need nothing extra, and ChatGPT's citations have closely followed Bing's top results.

Key takeaways

  • SEO wins a link on a results page; GEO wins a mention or a citation inside an answer from ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity or Google's AI.
  • Google says its AI features have no requirements beyond being indexed and able to show a snippet.
  • For a local business, GEO adds listings and reviews to the pages SEO already looks after.
  • AI answers change their picks between searches, so measure GEO over many questions, not one.

What is the difference between GEO and SEO?

SEO
Search engine optimization: making a page easy to crawl, index and rank, so it shows up as a link when someone searches.
GEO
Generative engine optimization: making a business easy for an AI answer to find, trust and quote, in ChatGPT, Google's AI Overviews, Perplexity or Gemini.

Do Google's AI answers need anything beyond SEO?

No. Google says there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. A page needs to be indexed and eligible to show in Search with a snippet; that is SEO's job.1

Why does one question bring up so many pages?

Google describes a query fan-out: its AI runs several related searches across subtopics and sources, then shows a wider set of links than a normal results page. A page that answers one narrow question well can be one of them.1

Does ChatGPT use Bing?

Its citations have followed Bing closely: in Seer Interactive's 2025 test 87% of SearchGPT citations matched Bing's top results. Bing Webmaster Tools belongs in GEO for that reason.3

Which part of a page do AI answers quote?

Mostly the top. In Kevin Indig's study, 44% of ChatGPT's citations came from the first third of a page, so put the answer, the prices and the hours first.4

Do AI engines prefer recent pages?

Seer's 2026 study found 75% of the pages AI engines cited had been updated in the past year. Show the date you last checked a page, and refresh it when prices or hours change.5

What does GEO mean for a local business?

Your own site first, then your listings. BrightLocal's September 2026 count of local AI citations put business websites at 42%, Google Business Profiles at 28.6% and Yelp at 9.5%. The full list is in our AI search statistics.6

Questions

Is GEO replacing SEO?

No. Google's AI answers draw on pages its search can already index, and ChatGPT's have largely matched Bing's top results. GEO adds to SEO; without SEO there is little for an AI answer to find.

Do I need an llms.txt file for GEO?

It does no harm, but Google does not read llms.txt, so expect no ranking effect from it in Google.

How do I know if AI answers mention my business?

Ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity the questions your customers ask, several times, and note who they name. PlacePilot's free report checks the listing and website facts these engines read; it does not yet check whether an engine names you.

What is the difference between GEO and AEO?

AEO, answer engine optimization, and GEO name much the same work: being the answer a search shows. GEO is the name more often used for generative engines such as ChatGPT and Gemini; for a small business the advice is the same.
