What is answer engine optimization (AEO)?

Answer engine optimization (AEO) is writing your pages so that Google's answer boxes and AI assistants can lift a clear, direct answer from them and show it to a customer.1

Why it matters for a small business

The idea is older than AI chat. Google's featured snippets already put a short passage from one page at the top, before the usual list of links.2

You can't pick that passage yourself. Google's documentation says no site can mark a page as a featured snippet; its systems decide.2

Google now treats AEO as plain SEO. What helps is a page that answers real questions in plain words, under headings that make each answer easy to find.1

A made-up kayak tour in Kotor

People kept asking Marko the same things: how long the trip takes, what to bring, and whether children can come. He added a short questions section to his tour page and answered each one in a sentence or two. A short, direct answer like that is what an answer box or an AI reply can repeat.

How to check it yourself

  1. Search your customers' questions on Google

Try one they ask you, like "is the kayak tour ok for kids". If a box at the top quotes a page, that is a featured snippet, and a click on it jumps to the quoted part.2

  2. Put the answer in the first sentence

Under each heading, answer first and explain after. Google says readers like pages split into sections with clear headings.1

  3. Keep answers in the page text

An answer inside an image or a pop-up is hard to quote. Google counts text versions of important content among the basics for its AI features.3

  4. Check nothing blocks snippets

A nosnippet rule stops Google from showing any snippet from that page, in the answer box or in normal results.2

Questions about AEO

Do I need special code for AEO?

No. Google says AI search needs no special schema.org markup and no AI text files. Clear answers in plain text count for more.1

Can I choose which part of my page Google quotes?

Not directly. You can only hold it back, with nosnippet or a lower max-snippet setting; Google picks the passage.2

Where this comes from

  1. Google's guide to generative AI search: AEO and GEO describe work on visibility in AI search, which Google treats as SEO; its AI features retrieve pages from the Search index and link those that support the answer; Google Search ignores llms.txt files; no special schema.org markup is needed; Business Profiles help local businesses show in AI responses; measure with the Generative AI performance report; no third-party tool sees Google's ranking or AI systems (last updated 10 July 2026)developers.google.com
  2. Featured snippets show a page's descriptive snippet first; a site cannot mark a page as a featured snippet; nosnippet blocks all snippets and max-snippet limits them; a click jumps to the quoted section (last updated 10 December 2025)developers.google.com
  3. To be a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode a page must be indexed and able to show a snippet; AI Overviews show only when Google judges them additive; important content should be in text; robots.txt rules for Googlebot and nosnippet or noindex controls apply; AI feature traffic counts in the Performance report's Web search type (last updated 10 December 2025)developers.google.com
